Why recovery matters

Pollution and its impact in Libya

Reporting and research on the pollution challenges that oil recovery, produced-water management and land remediation seek to address. These sources describe different locations and periods; they do not establish that Pavilion has remediated the sites discussed.

Oil pollution concerns in Libya’s oasis communities

Reporting from Awjila describes farmers’ concerns about crop losses and possible soil and water contamination near oil operations. Interviewees highlight untreated produced-water lakes. The article also records disagreement over the findings of a 2019 environmental assessment.

Date shown is the Libya Tribune republication date. These are attributed community concerns, not verified findings at Messla or evidence of Pavilion project outcomes.

Satellite study tracks a Libyan oilfield’s pollution footprint

A published study maps changes in a produced-water lake and oil-contaminated surfaces in Libya’s Sirte Basin using historical satellite imagery and field observations. It documents persistent oil-bearing ground and illustrates the long-term land-management challenge posed by disposal lakes.

The study withholds the field’s identity. It must not be read as a measurement of Messla or of Pavilion’s cleanup performance.

NOC study identifies soil pollution around evaporation ponds

NOC’s account of a Wahat environmental study identifies soil pollution around evaporation ponds from past produced-water disposal and calls for faster removal of accumulated oil. It also reports that local groundwater was unaffected by the injection methods assessed, while identifying sewage-related well-water contamination.

Published 14 March, describing a presentation on 13 March 2019. This is regional historical evidence from NOC’s own website, not an announcement about Pavilion or the Messla project.
